In 2016, the states of Maine, Mississippi, and Rhode Island will all hold their very first Local You Be The Chemist Challenge® competitions! That means that 41 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia will all send representatives to the 2016 National Challenge – and our staff is working to add even more new states!
Whether or not there’s a Minecraft enthusiast in your life, you’ve probably heard of the wildly popular world-building game. Now, a team of researchers in the UK has created MolCraft – a version of the game that teaches students about biochemistry!
The Breakthrough Prizes, founded by several prominent tech leaders, recognize scientific achievements the way actors are lauded for their work – with glamour and some serious cash. Could scientists be the new rock stars? We certainly hope so!
Last month, we trained 13 new Certified Instructors to lead our Essential Elements professional development workshops for K-8 educators. And then two of those instructors went home and started local You Be The Chemist Challenge® sites!

For many of us, autumn means trees that turn orange and yellow, pumpkin-flavored everything, and setting the clocks forward – which are all great starting points for scientific inquiry! We’ve been collecting some of our favorite resources for fall chemistry discussions, so you can introduce the students in your life to the science all around them.
A recent report found that 69% of parents say their children have STEM learning opportunities in their afterschool programs and and that these programs activate students’ interest in STEM. At CEF, we’ve been working with a variety of afterschool programs to incorporate our Activity Guide lessons into their curricula, so we’re excited to hear about how much students benefit from these programs!
