While some students are just dipping their toes into the sea of STEM research and career opportunities, others are already making waves! A special U.S. News report profiles 16 young scientists (ages 13-21) who are “making extraordinary strides in medical research, energy, computer sciences and other STEM fields.”
On May 16, 20 science teachers in Providence, RI attended one of our Essential Elements professional development workshops. Over bagels and coffee, local teachers brought their enthusiasm and curiosity to the fore as we guided them through our hands-on, interactive teaching methods, proven to get young scientists buzzing about chemistry.
Veronica Berns wrote a doctoral thesis in chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her topic? Quasicrystals: arrangements of atoms structured like crystals – but with a few non-crystalline quirks. Her problem? None of her family or friends could understand what she was working on. Berns solved that problem with a little creativity…

On May 2nd, CEF staff members teamed up with The Dow Chemical Company to exhibit at the 2015 Philadelphia Science Festival’s Carnival. On a bright, sunny day in Philly, we challenged students of all ages to explore properties of water and surfactants through an experiment called “floating paper clips!” We had a great day – and we think the attendees who stopped by our booth did, too.

Students in West Virginia and Puerto Rico participated in local You Be The Chemist Challenge® competitions for the very first time on Friday! Congratulations to all of the volunteers, educators, parents, and students involved in these competitions. With the addition of six new states this year, the Challenge program now reaches nearly 38,000 students in 36 U.S. states and territories!
